FIRST MURAL COMPLETED AT HEALTH CENTRE
Web posted on March 30, 2001 Local artist Maria Pezzano's mural in the children's reading corner is the first of several commissioned works of art that will grace the walls of the new Guelph Community Health Centre in downtown Guelph. The Centre, located in the old Sears building at the corner of Wyndham and Woolwich Streets, has undergone a major expansion with the purchase its own building.
Pezzano's brightly coloured acrylic mural depicts the well known nursery rhyme The Cat and the Fiddle. She said that, while this is a departure from her more usual themes of still lifes with a whimsical approach, it is something she explored for a recent show at Barber Gallery. So it made sense to carry the theme to this children's spot at the Centre.
What Pezzaneo did not know when she started the work was that it would be dedicated as a memorial to Nicholas Mykitschak, who died last year at the age of 21. His parents Nancy and Jarema thought this would be a fitting tribute to their son. "It made the work more personal when I found that out," said Pezzano.
In addition to the visual aspects, the mural includes the text of the poem, and a border of the alphabet and numbers up to 10. This was done, said the artist, to make the work multi-functional. Parents can sit with their children and enjoy the art while also reading the poem or pointing out familiar letters. Wendy Dempsey, Development and Collaboration Coordinator for the centre expects that the donor wall and a nature water feature in the atrium area as well as another mural will be completed in time for a grand opening in May.
