"Guelph - The City of Music"
... a Millennium Project

For the past several months, a committee of local musicians, music festival staff and representatives of the tourism industry has been working to develop a new marketing concept for Guelph based on the theme of “Guelph - The City of Music.” Under the auspices of Guelph Visitor and Convention Services, this millennium project is a comprehensive program of local awareness, product development and marketing, designed to harness an authentic asset of the quality of life in the City of Guelph – that is, music – and utilize it as an economic development tool to increase the number of visitors to Guelph.

To achieve these goals, “The City of Music”committee has planned several special activities for the year 2000. For example, the Guelph Music Awards will be launched to recognize and celebrate local musicians who have recorded their works over the past year. In addition, local businesses and community groups will be encouraged to include music performance as part of their meetings, events and public gatherings. There are also plans to create special promotional music festival/ music performance packages as well as a key publication highlighting all types of music performances in Guelph and Wellington County during 2000. Some 80 000 copies of the publication will be produced and distributed in the Toronto market as well as regionally.

The “Guelph - The City of Music” Millennium project has applied for funding from the Rural Job Strategies Program of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The committee is also seeking funds from community stakeholders.
