Arts and Labour
Symposium

On Saturday, October 2, 1999, the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) will be hosting a one-day symposium entitled Rewriting the Script: Workers in the Cultural Sector. It will
be held at the Ontario Workers’ Arts and Heritage Centre in Hamilton, starting at 9:30 a.m..

This symposium continues a process that started back in 1997 with an OFL policy
paper entitled “Cultural Work”. Two follow-up roundtables were held in 1998, when representatives from professional artists’ associations and cultural industry unions looked at how to effect change. The October symposium will go one step further and work to define the cultural sector, examine working conditions and look at ways in which professional artists and cultural industry workers can work together. Covering issues such as volunteerism, human rights and discrimination, benefits, Status of the Artist legislation, training and organizing, workshops should be of interest to artists, technicians, stage hands, curators, actors, musicians and others in unions and professional artist associations.

For more information or to register for the symposium, contact Sylvia Stewart at the OFL 1-800-668-9318 or email: ssstewart@ofl-fto.on.ca.
